Gram rate by karat, read at the same instant
Four karats, one reading. The 22 karat row is the one the page leads with. Twenty-four karat is pure gold, 21 is the usual Arabic-market karat and 18 the usual European one. Each row is the same moment scaled to its own purity, so the rows cannot disagree.
| Karat | AED / gram | USD / gram | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 karat | 490.58 | 133.58 | Pure gold: every other row is a share of this |
| 22 karat | 449.70 | 122.45 | 91.7% pure, the karat the UAE asks about most in English |
| 21 karat | 429.26 | 116.89 | 87.5% pure, the Gulf Arabic convention |
| 18 karat | 367.94 | 100.19 | 75% pure |
The tola, the ounce and the kilo in 22 karat
Same gold, three more ways to weigh it. Each row is the gram rate above multiplied by the unit's weight in grams.

Each day's figure is our own reading at 00:00 UTC; the first row is the price now, and each change is against the row beneath it. From our own record, not a bought archive, so the table grows by one row a day.
Metal value of 22 karat pieces, with 5% VAT added for comparison
The right-hand column adds 5 per cent to the metal value. It is a floor, not a quote: it applies only to a piece that is standard-rated, it leaves out the making charge that a shop adds to the piece, and VAT on the making charge would come on top of it.

Raw metal value only. It excludes any making charge and any sales tax, and it is not what a shop will pay you when you sell.
Why the dirham figure has no exchange-rate lag in it
Every dirham figure here starts as a dollar figure and is converted once. In most currencies that step is where a price quietly goes wrong, because the exchange rate behind it can be hours old. For the dirham it cannot: the rate is 3.6725 dirhams to the dollar, and the Central Bank of the UAE prints that number in its monthly table of exchange rates for VAT.
A rate that does not move has no age to report. The same holds for the Saudi and Qatari riyals, which is why those pages exist. Where a currency does float, as the Egyptian pound does, the page prints the age of the rate beside every converted price.
The peg is read from the primary: Central Bank of the UAE, Exchange Rates against UAE Dirham for VAT related obligations, June 2026, which lists the US dollar at 3.6725. The table exists for tax filings. It is a reference rate and not a retail quote, so a money changer owes you nothing at that rate.
VAT on gold in the UAE is 5% as standard and zero for investment metal
The UAE introduced VAT in 2018 at a standard rate of 5 per cent. The Ministry of Finance lists "certain investment grade precious metals (e.g. gold, silver, of 99% purity)" among the zero-rated supplies. Its page does not list jewellery as zero-rated.
For a finished piece that points to the standard rate. A press report from 2018, quoting a tax partner, says retail sales of gold and diamonds are "still fully subject to VAT at five per cent". That is a quote from a professional in a newspaper, not a ruling from the Federal Tax Authority, and it is eight years old, so treat it as a lead and check the invoice. We did not read the Authority's own guidance on how the making charge is taxed, so we say nothing about it.
Since 2025 a separate rule applies between VAT-registered businesses: Cabinet Decision 127 of 2024 makes the buyer, not the seller, account for the VAT on precious metals and stones. It governs trade between registered businesses and does not change what a consumer pays at a counter.

Why this page leads with 22 karat
We counted monthly searches in English for the UAE. Twenty-two karat led with about 5,620, then 24 karat with about 4,000, 18 karat with about 3,400 and 21 karat with about 1,010. The tola, which nobody searches for in Arabic, still draws about 2,690 searches a month in English.
In Arabic the UAE ranks 21 karat first, so the two languages get separate pages and not translations. That is the whole finding. The reason English searchers favour 22 karat is a matter of migration and jewellery custom that we have not looked into, and we would rather say so than invent one.
What this page deliberately does not tell you
You will not find a UAE making charge here, whether as a figure, a range or a "usually". Nor shop, souk or district names, nor the price a buyer would pay for gold you already own, nor what customs allows a traveller to carry. None of that has been researched, and a believable made-up number is the quickest route to being sure and wrong.
What the page offers instead is a metal rate that can be checked line by line. Where a number cannot be backed up, a dash stands in its place.
The figure has limits of its own. A reading is two minutes old at worst. When none arrives for five minutes the desk flags the price as delayed, and after fifteen it falls back to the last good price and labels it.
A spot metal price is not an offer any shop must honour. If one looks wrong to you, report it.
Questions UAE buyers ask
How much is 22K gold in Dubai today?
It is the figure in the desk panel at the top, in dirhams per gram, read again every two minutes. That is metal only. A 22 karat piece is 91.7 per cent gold, so its gram price is 91.7 per cent of the gram price of pure gold taken at the same moment. A jeweller then adds a making charge, and VAT where it applies.
How much is 1 gram of 24K gold in Dubai?
Look at the first row of the karat table. Pure gold is the top of the ladder, so 24 karat is the largest figure in the table, and 22, 21 and 18 karat are each that figure scaled down to their own purity.
How much is 1 tola of gold in Dubai?
The tola row in the unit table gives it in dirhams for 22 karat. The tola weighs 11.6638038 grams, which is exactly three eighths of a troy ounce, so the row is the ounce price times 0.375 with no rounding in between. The 1833 definition of 180 troy grains, against 480 in the ounce, is where the 0.375 comes from.
Is there VAT on gold in the UAE?
The UAE's standard VAT rate is 5 per cent. The Ministry of Finance lists investment grade precious metals of 99 per cent purity as zero-rated, and does not list jewellery there. A 2018 press report quoting a tax partner puts retail gold and diamond sales at the full 5 per cent. We have not read the Federal Tax Authority's own ruling on retail jewellery, so check the invoice.
Why is the gold rate in Dubai the same as the world price?
Gold trades in dollars per ounce in a single global market, and the dirham is fixed at 3.6725 to the dollar, so turning the world price into dirhams needs no second input. The difference you meet in a shop sits in the making charge, the shop's margin and VAT where it applies. The metal itself is priced the same way everywhere.
Why is the price in a shop higher than the price on this page?
A shop sells a made piece and this page prices the metal inside it. The difference is the making charge, the shop's margin and any VAT. We leave out a UAE making-charge number because we have not researched one, and a guessed range would do more harm than a gap.
