Gold Calculator

Gold value = spot price per ounce ÷ 31.1034768 × (karat ÷ 24) × weight in grams × the currency rate.

Put plainly: divide the ounce price by the number of grams in an ounce to get the price of pure gold per gram, take your karat's share of that, then multiply by what you have. The calculator below runs those exact steps and prints them, so you can redo the multiplication on any pocket calculator and check it.

The feed is down. The calculation below uses the last good price we hold, and its age is shown. Do not rely on it as a live price until updates resume.

Metal value

Raw metal value only. It excludes any making charge and any sales tax, and it is not what a shop will pay you when you sell.

Why the working is shown

Any calculator can produce a number. The number on its own does not tell you whether it is right. So this page prints the unit price it used next to the answer. If the two do not multiply out, you have caught us, and that is the point.

There is exactly one fixed figure in the formula: 31.1034768, the number of grams in a troy ounce by definition. Everything else is either a live price we read or a purity fixed by the karat.

Three things this calculator will not do

It will not price a piece of jewellery. The metal is one part of what you paid; the workmanship is the other, and it varies by piece, by shop and by country.

It will not quote a currency we cannot stand behind. The currency list is deliberately short. Rates that we refresh only every few hours are left out rather than shown as though they were live, because an answer built on an old rate is wrong without looking wrong.

It will not weigh anything for you. If your weight is a guess, the answer is a guess. Kitchen scales are usually accurate to a gram, which at current prices is a real amount of money, so a jeweller's scale is worth using before you act on any figure.

Common questions

How do I calculate the value of gold myself?

Divide the spot price of an ounce by 31.1034768 to get the price of one gram of pure gold. Multiply that by the purity of your karat, which is the karat number divided by 24. Then multiply by your weight in grams. That is the whole calculation.

What is 21 karat gold worth compared with 24 karat?

Exactly 87.5 per cent as much, gram for gram, because 21 divided by 24 is 0.875. For 22 karat it is 91.7 per cent, for 18 karat it is 75 per cent. The metal is worth its purity and nothing else.

Does this include the making charge or tax?

No. It gives you the raw metal value. A shop adds a making charge for the workmanship, and most countries add sales tax on finished jewellery. Both sit on top of the number this page gives you.

Is this what a shop will pay me if I sell?

No. Treat it as a ceiling on the metal value, not an offer. A buyer works from the raw metal price and usually deducts something on top for second-hand pieces, so what you are offered will be lower.

Why is silver not in this calculator?

Silver is not measured in karats. It is measured in fineness out of a thousand, such as 925 for sterling. Putting silver behind a karat dropdown would suggest otherwise, so silver has its own page.
