Why the riyal figure has no exchange-rate lag in it

Gold is quoted in US dollars, so every riyal price on this page is a dollar price converted once. That conversion would normally be the weak link, because an exchange rate read some hours ago can quietly make a fresh metal price wrong. It is not the weak link here, because the Qatari riyal is not floating against the dollar. It is fixed at 3.64 riyals to one dollar by Qatar Central Bank, which buys dollars at 3.6385 and sells to banks at 3.6415.

A fixed rate has no age, so there is nothing about it to disclose. That is why this page exists in riyals at all, and it is the same reason our Saudi pages exist in Saudi riyals. Where a currency genuinely floats, we would have to tell you how old the rate was before we could show you the number, and we would rather build the pages where that question does not arise.

The peg is quoted from the primary: Qatar Central Bank, Bank Instructions, Part (I) Exchange Rate Policy, fifteenth edition, September 2013, page 39. The 3.6385 and 3.6415 pair is the central bank's own dealing rate with commercial banks. It is not a retail rate and no exchange house is obliged to offer it to you.

Gold in Qatar carries no VAT today, and that sentence has a date on it

As at September 2026, Qatar imposes no VAT and no sales tax. So unlike its neighbours, the gap between the metal price on this page and the price on a Qatari invoice is the making charge and the shop's margin, with no tax line sitting on top of them.

We date that statement rather than write it flat, because it is a fact about right now and not a permanent feature of the country. A value added tax is expected under the common GCC framework at an anticipated 5 per cent, no implementation date has been set, and Qatar approved a draft e-invoicing law in May 2026 which is the kind of groundwork that usually precedes one. We will not print 5 per cent as though it applied, and if you are reading this long after the date above, check before you rely on it.

Why this page leads with 22 karat

Because that is what people in Qatar searching in English actually ask. When we pulled the two Qatar search results pages, the question "How much is 22K gold in Qatar?" appeared in the questions block on both of them, and it was the first question on one. Twenty-one karat, which dominates Arabic searches across the Gulf, is not what the English side of this market asks first.

We report what we measured and stop there. Why the English and Arabic sides of the same city should prefer different karats is a question about migration and jewellery custom that we have not researched, so we are not going to offer you an explanation for it. All four karats are in the table above at the same instant, so the ranking of them changes nothing about the numbers you came for.

What this page deliberately does not tell you

It does not give you a making charge for Qatar. Not a figure, not a range, not a "typically". Our Saudi pages carry one because it took a research pass to find something attributable; Qatar has not had that pass, and a plausible-sounding range invented to fill the space would be the single easiest way to be confidently wrong.

It does not name shops, price any named jeweller's product, or tell you what a buyer in the souq will pay for a piece you already own. It does not state a customs position on precious metals: the general duty on non-GCC goods is documented, but nothing we opened says anything specific about gold, and the absence of a mention is not an exemption.

What you get instead is a metal price we can defend line by line, with the age of every number printed next to it, and a dash in place of anything we cannot stand behind.
